One-Minute to Five-Minute Practice

The original breath-focused practice remains the foundation: start with one minute, become thorough with it, then gradually increase to five minutes.

How to begin

  1. Sit comfortably and keep the body relaxed.
  2. Close your eyes or soften your gaze.
  3. Bring attention to the natural breath.
  4. When the mind wanders, notice it and gently return to the next breath.
  5. Continue until your chosen time ends.

Progression

1 minute: Become familiar with the practice.

2 minutes: Move up when one minute feels steady.

3 minutes: Keep the same quality of attention.

5 minutes: Continue the simple practice without forcing it.
